I’m Linda, and this space is my way of honoring a feeling that’s lived inside me for decades. Hiraeth is a Welsh word for a deep longing — not just for a place, but for a way of living that shaped you and still calls you back. For me, that longing comes from the homestead where I grew up in Alaska. Life there was simple, hard, and beautiful. We gardened, picked wild berries, raised rabbits and chickens, cut and hauled firewood, and packed water from a spring. It was a childhood shaped by land, hard work, and a sense of purpose.
I know I won’t return to Alaska’s harshness, not at this stage of my life. But I still long for the rhythm of that life — the self‑sufficiency, the closeness to nature, the feeling of making a life with my own hands. So I’m here in Northern California, fixing up my home, shaping the land I have, and learning the skills I’ll need for whatever comes next. Maybe I’ll stay. Maybe I’ll eventually move to a larger homestead where I can grow all my food. Time will tell.
This blog is my journey back toward that remembered life — slowly, with intention. It’s a place to explore the longing, the work, the hope, and the steady steps toward a home that feels true.
This is my Hiraeth. This is my homestead journey toward home.
