One of the best parts of my homestead layout is the lane that runs along the front of all the paddocks. It looks simple on paper — just a straight path — but it’s actually the backbone of the entire system. The lane is what makes the rotation work smoothly, keeps the goats where they belong, and gives me easy access to every part of the pasture and hay areas without stress or confusion.
The lane runs between the goat yard and the paddocks, and each paddock has a full‑width gate that opens directly into it. When I open a gate, it swings across the lane and blocks off the rest of it. That means the goats can only go into the paddock I choose, and nowhere else. It’s like a selector switch: one gate open, one destination available. The rest of the lane stays off‑limits.
This design makes moving the goats incredibly easy. I don’t have to chase them or worry about them slipping past me. I just open the gate to the paddock they’re rotating into, and the lane itself becomes the barrier that keeps everything controlled. When the gate is open, the goats walk straight in. When the gate is closed, the lane becomes my walkway again.
The lane also connects directly to my haystack area at the far end. After I cut hay with the scythe and let it dry in the paddock, I’ll gather it on a tarp and drag it down the lane to the haystack. Because the haystack sits at the very end, I can reach it easily, but the goats can’t. When I’m not adding hay, the open gate blocks off that end of the lane, keeping the haystack protected and separate from the grazing rotation.
This setup ties everything together:
- The goats move through the lane into whichever paddock is open.
- The hay paddocks rotate once a year with the pasture paddocks.
- The goats fertilize the paddocks naturally when they graze.
- The lane gives me clean access to every paddock without entering goat space.
- The haystack sits safely at the end, reachable for me but blocked from the goats.
It’s a simple system, but it’s incredibly efficient. The lane is the quiet organizer behind the scenes — the part that keeps the whole homestead running smoothly. It’s one of those features that doesn’t look dramatic, but once you understand how it works, you realize it’s the key to the entire layout.
